| Popis líce | The obverse displays the national arms of Costa Rica at center: a shield surmounted by an ornate scroll-work crest and depicting three volcanoes rising from the sea with a sailing vessel in the foreground, two additional ships in the background, and a rising sun with rays above the central peak, flanked on either side by panels bearing sheaves of wheat and a cornucopia. Seven five-pointed stars arc across the upper interior of the shield, representing the provinces of Central America. The shield is framed by two laurel branches tied at the base with a ribbon, and the date 1850 appears in the lower field beneath the wreath. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA runs along the periphery. |
