This piece belongs to Israel's long-running Hanukkah lamp series, which the Bank of Israel has issued annually since 1958, each year featuring a lamp from a different Jewish diaspora community. The 1996 issue highlights the French tradition, specifically the distinctive Alsatian bench-type lamp whose form reflects the constraints and adaptations of Jewish communities in early modern France.
The series was originally conceived partly as a vehicle for attracting foreign currency from collectors abroad — a hard-currency consideration that shaped Israeli commemorative policy through much of the state's early decades.
