The Memduhiye series was introduced as part of Abdülmecid I's broader monetary reorganization following the Tanzimat reforms of 1839, which sought to rationalize an Ottoman coinage system that had become chaotic through decades of debased issues and competing regional mints. Kostantiniyye — the Ottoman mint designation for Constantinople — was the primary facility for gold issues of this type.
The regnal year 1255 AH corresponds to the early years of Abdülmecid's reign, a period when the empire was simultaneously modernizing its institutions and hemorrhaging financially from Crimean War-era borrowing that would eventually produce the default of 1875.
