Obverse description Central device comprises the Imperial German eagle displayed, with wings spread and head turned to the right, bearing on its breast a small Hohenzollern shield; the eagle is surmounted by the Imperial crown with pendant lappets. The circular legend DEUTSCHES REICH arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 1901 appears in the lower field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.

Reverse description The denomination 1/2 MARK is presented in a decorative Art Nouveau cartouche formed by two sinuous, intertwining foliate stems terminating in stylised poppy or tulip blossoms at the upper left and right. The fraction 1/2 appears prominently above the word MARK in the centre of the cartouche, while the Munich Mint mark D is struck below in the lower lobe of the ornamental frame. A beaded border encircles the entire design.
