Beschrijving voorzijde A rampant griffin facing left dominates the field, depicted with raised wings and clutching a sword in its right talon. The beast is rendered in bold relief typical of late 16th-century Baltic coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading LIVONIAE · DVCATVS, proclaiming the Duchy of Livonia. The irregular flan and variable alignment are characteristic of hammered coinage of this period.

Aanvullende informatie

Jan Hieronimowicz Chodkiewicz governed Livonia as Lithuanian starosta during one of the most unstable periods in the territory's history — caught between Muscovite pressure from the east and the competing claims of Poland-Lithuania, Sweden, and Denmark following the collapse of the Livonian Confederation in 1561. Coins struck at Dole Castle under his authority represent a brief window of semi-autonomous Lithuanian administration before the region was more firmly absorbed into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Dole, a fortified island position on the Daugava south of Riga, served as Chodkiewicz's administrative seat. Its mint output was limited and the series is genuinely scarce — Haljak's corpus documents very few die pairings for this denomination.
