Descrizione del dritto	Central device comprising the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing castles and escutcheons — superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the whole surmounted by a royal crown. The legend encircles the design in the outer field, reading PETRUS.V.D.G.REX.PORT.ET.D.GUINEÆ, separated by pellets, with a finely beaded border running along the coin's periphery.

Descrizione del rovescio	The denomination MACUTA above the fraction 1/2 is prominently displayed in bold raised lettering at the centre of the field, flanked by six decorative floral rosettes arranged symmetrically around the value. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded circle, outside of which the legend AFRICA PORTUGUEZA with the date 1860 runs around the upper periphery, while PORTUGUEZA continues around the lower portion, all within a milled outer border.
