Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio, facing right, depicted with flowing curled hair and lace collar in the Baroque courtly style. The effigy is rendered in high relief with considerable artistic detail in the hair and drapery. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait, reading FRAN·I·MVT·REG·EC·DVX·VIII·1656, identifying the ruler with his titles and the date. The field is flat and unadorned, with the bust occupying the majority of the coin's surface. The coin bears the characteristic irregular flan and uneven strike typical of mid-seventeenth-century hammered billon coinage.

Beschrijving keerzijde Crowned quartered Este dynastic shield of arms, supported on either side by an eagle displayed, rendered in the bold relief characteristic of Baroque Italian hammered coinage. The shield is elaborately mantled with foliate scrollwork at the base. A circular Latin legend surrounds the composition, reading · NOBILITAS · ESTENSIS ·, a motto referencing the nobility of the Este family. The crown above the shield is shown in detail with arched elements. The overall composition is centrally placed on the flan, with the supporting eagles and ornamental mantling filling the field on either side.
