A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield in the outer ring, partially legible on this struck example. The design is characteristic of the hammered coinage of Philip II for the Duchy of Brabant, executed in a bold if somewhat crude die-cut style typical of late sixteenth-century low-denomination Netherlandish issues. |
