Philip II authorized copper coinage for the Spanish Netherlands during a period when the Dutch Revolt had thoroughly disrupted normal monetary supply across Brabant. The "gigot" denomination — a French term for the small copper pieces that circulated at the lowest level of daily commerce — was chronically underproduced relative to demand, which is why contemporaries frequently complained of shortages even as silver issues remained abundant.
The 1593–1598 dating places this issue squarely in the years following the fall of Antwerp to Parma in 1585, after which the city's commercial dominance collapsed and mint output shifted accordingly.
