| Popis rubu | The denomination '1/2 KREUTZER' is displayed in three lines within an elaborate baroque cartouche or shield-shaped ornamental frame, accompanied by the date of issue below and the Günzburg mint mark 'H' at the foot. The cartouche is flanked by foliate and scrollwork ornaments, with decorative elements at the top and bottom lending the design a distinctly Josephinian baroque character. The entire composition is set within a plain field, enclosed by the milled rim. The inscription is rendered in bold, well-spaced capital letters typical of late 18th-century Austrian coinage. |

Further Austria — the scattered Habsburg territories west of the Tyrol, including Breisgau, Vorarlberg, and various Swabian holdings — maintained its own regional coinage partly as an administrative convenience and partly because Joseph II's sweeping reforms demanded local fiscal infrastructure to function. The 1/2 Kreutzer was the smallest practical denomination in copper, issued specifically to address the chronic shortage of petty coinage that plagued these peripheral territories throughout the 1780s.
Joseph II abolished serfdom in 1781 and pushed through a wave of ecclesiastical suppressions that liquidated hundreds of monasteries — the resulting economic disruption in these western territories made reliable small-denomination coinage more pressing than usual.
