Strasbourg struck this issue while still operating under the monetary conventions of the Holy Roman Empire, just four years before Louis XIV's forces effectively absorbed the city into French administrative control in 1672 — though formal annexation wasn't completed until 1681. The city's independent coinage tradition effectively ended with that transition, making late issues from the 1660s among the final expressions of Strasbourgian municipal minting authority.
The Guldenthaler denomination itself was already archaic by 1668, a relic of sixteenth-century reckoning that few mints still bothered to strike.
