The whole composition is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the circular Latin legend reading +IOES+RDV.D.G.MVRBAC+ET.LVTREN+AB, identifying Abbot John Rudolph by the grace of God of Murbach and Lüders. The engraving reflects the characteristic bold relief style of 16th-century German ecclesiastical coinage. |

The surrounding circular Latin legend reads MAXIMILIANI+IMP+AVG+P+F+DECRETO 68, invoking the authority of Emperor Maximilian II and citing the imperial decree under which the coin was struck, with the date (15)68 incorporated into the legend. The design is executed in the vigorous hammered style typical of South German coinage of the period. |
