Innocent XI is better remembered for his war chests than his coinage — his papacy was defined by financing the Holy League's campaign against the Ottoman Empire, culminating in the relief of Vienna in 1683. The NOCET MINVS type belongs to the years immediately following that victory, struck while the pope was simultaneously battling Louis XIV over Gallicanism and the right of régale. He died in 1689 nearly bankrupt, having spent the papal treasury on a war he considered existential for Christendom.

The large arms variant is catalogued as a distinct die type across MIR and Muntoni, reflecting workshop variation rather than a policy change.
