| Obverse description | Central field depicts a displayed eagle with wings spread, rendered in a bold medieval style typical of late 14th-century feudal coinage. The eagle, a heraldic emblem associated with the episcopal authority of the Bishopric of Valence and Die, occupies the majority of the flan. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, separating it from the surrounding peripheral legend. The circumferential legend in uncial Latin characters reads: ✠ GVILEMVS ⁑ EPISCOPVS, identifying William (of La Voulte) as bishop. The strike is characteristic of hammered coinage, with an irregularly shaped flan. |
