William II of Avesnes — also Holy Roman Emperor-elect as William IV of Holland — spent much of this period locked in a ruinous conflict with the Frisians that ultimately killed him in 1345 at the Battle of Warns. His coinage reflects the monetary pressures of a count perpetually financing military campaigns on multiple fronts, often through debasement.
Billon issues of this type circulated across a Low Countries monetary zone already fragmenting under the competitive coinages of Flanders, Brabant, and Liège.
