The inner legend ring and outer legend ring are both inscribed in Latin Gothic characters, referencing the mint city of Valenciennes and invoking the sign of the cross. The quarters of the cross are plain, with the arms of the cross forming a strong architectural presence characteristic of the hammered coinage of the County of Hainaut in the early fourteenth century. A beaded inner circle frames the central cross motif. |

William I of Avesnes, Count of Hainaut, Holland, and Zeeland, issued this fractional piece during a period of intense monetary competition among the Low Countries lordships, each rushing to fill demand for small silver currency as French royal coinage retreated from northern circulation. The "obol blanche" denomination — a half-groat in white silver — was part of a broader Hainaut minting program that borrowed heavily from French gros tournois conventions while asserting local monetary authority.
William died in 1337, and his reign saw repeated debasement pressures from neighboring Flanders and Brabant.
