Obverse description Central field depicts a crowned, enthroned figure of Louis I of Nevers, Count of Flanders, shown facing, holding attributes of authority in a hieratic Gothic style typical of 14th-century Flemish coinage. The effigy is enclosed within a plain inner circle, with a dotted border separating the central device from the surrounding legend. The peripheral Latin legend reads + MONETA: GANDENSIS, identifying this as the money of Ghent, struck in Gothic lettering characteristic of the period. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, consistent with hammered production. Overall execution reflects the Gothic artistic conventions prevalent in the County of Flanders during the reign of Louis I.
