John of Bavaria governed the Prince-Bishopric of Liège without ever taking holy orders — a fact the papacy found chronically inconvenient. He was elected prince-bishop in 1389 at around age fourteen, remaining technically a layman throughout much of his rule while wielding full temporal authority over one of the wealthiest ecclesiastical territories in the Low Countries.
The Griffin coinage imitated the popular gold griffins of the broader Lotharingian and Rhenish monetary sphere, a pragmatic response to regional trade demand rather than any sovereign ambition. John was deposed in 1418, the same year his range closes.
