Aversbeschreibung Central field dominated by a standing griffin displayed, facing left, with wings spread and talons clutching a shield bearing the arms of the Prince-Bishopric of Liege. The creature is rendered in high relief with fine feather detailing typical of late medieval Mosan goldsmithing. A beaded inner circle frames the central device. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial characters reads the issuer's title, separated by a cross pattee at the beginning.

Reversbeschreibung Central field features an elaborate Gothic architectural composition with a floriated cross at the centre, its arms terminating in fleurs-de-lis and surrounded by four heraldic shields placed in the angles, bearing the quartered arms associated with the Prince-Bishopric. The design is richly detailed with tracery and foliate ornament in the late Gothic style. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding legend. The marginal inscription in uncial Latin letters conveys a devotional text, punctuated by small crosses.

Zusätzliche Informationen

John of Bavaria governed the Prince-Bishopric of Liège without ever taking holy orders — a fact the papacy found chronically inconvenient. He was elected prince-bishop in 1389 at around age fourteen, remaining technically a layman throughout much of his rule while wielding full temporal authority over one of the wealthiest ecclesiastical territories in the Low Countries.

The Griffin coinage imitated the popular gold griffins of the broader Lotharingian and Rhenish monetary sphere, a pragmatic response to regional trade demand rather than any sovereign ambition. John was deposed in 1418, the same year his range closes.
