Ypres was besieged by Alessandro Farnese's Spanish forces from June 1583 to April 1584, part of the systematic reconquest of the southern Netherlands during the Eighty Years' War. Siege coinages were struck by the besieged garrison out of practical necessity — standard supply lines were cut, and civil commerce still required a functioning medium of exchange. Gold at .750 fineness suggests the mint was working with whatever metal was available locally, almost certainly melted plate or jewelry rather than refined bullion.
Ypres surrendered on 7 April 1584. Few pieces of this type survived the aftermath.
