Philip II inherited the seventeen provinces of the Low Countries from his father Charles V in 1555, but his attempts to centralize Habsburg monetary policy created immediate friction with the provincial estates. Holland's gold coinage of this period reflects an uneasy compromise — the province retained nominal minting authority while being pressed toward imperial weight and fineness standards that suited Castilian trade interests more than Netherlandish ones.
Production of this type ceased by 1567, the year the Duke of Alba arrived with his Army of Flanders and the Council of Troubles effectively suspended normal civic administration throughout the northern provinces.
