Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Danish royal arms — an oval shield bearing three passant lions accompanied by nine hearts, the national arms of Denmark — surmounted by a large open crown. The armorial shield is rendered in high relief within an inner beaded border. The surrounding circular legend, struck in bold hammered lettering and broken by the crown at top, reads CHRI·STIAN·IIII·D·G·DAN, abbreviating the king's name and royal style. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of hammered gold coinage of the early seventeenth century.
