Martin I, called "the Humane," inherited the Crown of Aragon in 1396 following the extinction of the main Barcelonese line and ruled without a legitimate heir until his death in 1410 — an dynastic dead end that triggered the Compromise of Caspe in 1412 and ended the House of Barcelona entirely. This half-florin belongs to that final chapter. The Aragonese florin series itself had been modeled closely on the Florentine florin since the mid-fourteenth century, with Barcelona operating as the primary mint for Catalan gold throughout Martin's reign.
