Anna Marie Louise d'Orléans — the Grande Mademoiselle, as she was known at court — issued coins in her own name as sovereign Princess of Dombes from 1652 until the principality was absorbed into France in 1762, decades after her death. She had inherited Dombes from her father Gaston d'Orléans, and her insistence on exercising full sovereign minting rights was entirely consistent with a personality that had, in 1652, personally ordered the Bastille cannon fired in support of the Frondeurs against her cousin Louis XIV. The king never forgot it.
The "2nd type" distinction in the Divo classification reflects a modification to the die design within this short three-year window — a typical refinement in a small feudal mint operating with limited engraving resources.
