The VOC half duit in gold was never intended for ordinary trade — the company minted gold fractions primarily to facilitate small-denomination transactions in specific regional markets where local custom or commodity pricing demanded precise specie. Utrecht's provincial mint struck these under VOC contract throughout the second half of the eighteenth century, a period when the Company's finances were deteriorating badly enough that its dividend payments were being funded by debt rather than profit. The VOC declared bankruptcy in 1799, just six years after the last of these was struck.
