Authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, this half dollar is part of a broader congressional effort to diversify the faces appearing on American coinage — a program that also covers quarters and dollar coins through 2025. The half dollar denomination is an awkward vehicle for the effort: it has effectively been absent from everyday commerce since the early 1970s, produced almost entirely for collector sets rather than bank rolls.
Tubman had previously been selected to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 Federal Reserve Note, a decision announced in 2016 but repeatedly delayed by the Treasury Department under successive administrations.
