Reverse description The reverse depicts a three-quarter figure of Harriet Tubman holding a spyglass, referencing her distinguished service as a scout and spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. A row of Civil War-era military tents occupies the background field, underscoring her role in Union intelligence operations. Peripheral legends encircle the design, citing her multiple contributions: nurse, scout, spy, and leader of the Combahee River Raid. The national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appear alongside the denomination HALF DOLLAR.

Additional information

Authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, this half dollar is part of a broader congressional effort to diversify the faces appearing on American coinage — a program that also covers quarters and dollar coins through 2025. The half dollar denomination is an awkward vehicle for the effort: it has effectively been absent from everyday commerce since the early 1970s, produced almost entirely for collector sets rather than bank rolls.

Tubman had previously been selected to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 Federal Reserve Note, a decision announced in 2016 but repeatedly delayed by the Treasury Department under successive administrations.
