Obverse description Seated Liberty is depicted in full figure facing left, seated upon a rock, her right hand grasping a pole surmounted by a Phrygian cap symbolizing liberty, while her left arm rests upon a shield bearing the word LIBERTY in the field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper periphery, with the date positioned in the exergue below the figure. The design, executed in the neoclassical style by Christian Gobrecht, is framed by a beaded border.
