Beschrijving keerzijde A cross pattée of similar style to the obverse dominates the concave field, its arms dividing the surrounding legend into four sections. The inscription ⸰ DE MA NT VE, an abbreviated form of 'de Mantua', identifies the issuing commune. The relief lettering is bold but somewhat worn, consistent with the heavily circulated nature of these small billon half-denari. The overall style reflects the simple yet emblematic design vocabulary of communal Italian coinage under the Bonacolsi signoria.

Aanvullende informatie

The Bonacolsi family seized control of Mantua in 1272 and held it for over five decades before being violently overthrown by the Gonzaga in 1328 — a coup executed during a public festival, catching the ruling family almost entirely unprepared. Coinage issued under their signoria occupies an ambiguous position: struck in the name of the Commune rather than the dynasty itself, it deliberately projected civic legitimacy the Bonacolsi were still consolidating.

The billon content of these small denominazioni varies considerably across the type, reflecting chronic silver shortages that plagued northern Italian mints throughout the late Duecento.
