The date appears below the bust, except on issues of 1564 and 1566 where it is placed above the bust, divided by the mint mark. The encircling Latin legend reads PHS D G HISP Z REX DVX BRAB, identifying Philip as King of Spain and Duke of Brabant, separated by pellets. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | The quartered royal arms of Philip II of Spain, incorporating the quarters of Castile, León, Aragon, and Burgundy among others, surmounted by a closed imperial crown. The shield is flanked on either side by the characteristic Burgundian firesteels (briquet), emblems of the Order of the Golden Fleece, each hung from a chain segment. The Burgundian saltire cross forms the underlying armorial composition. The encircling Latin legend DOMINUS MIHI ADIVTOR (The Lord is my helper) runs around the periphery, separated by pellets. |
