The Philipsdaalder series was introduced under Philip II's monetary reforms aimed at standardizing coinage across the Habsburg Netherlands — a persistent headache given that each province jealously guarded its minting privileges. Holland struck its own half-daalder within this framework, though not always in strict conformity with the imperial edicts governing fineness and weight. The GH#211-11a designation places this among the documented Holland varieties, distinct from issues of Zeeland, Gelderland, and the other minting provinces.
Production spans the years immediately preceding the outbreak of the Dutch Revolt in 1568, meaning late-date examples of this type were struck within months of Alba's arrival and the subsequent suspension of normal civic life in the Netherlands.
