Southern Rhodesia gained the right to issue its own coinage in 1932, when the British government granted the self-governing colony full monetary independence from South Africa. The 1937 issue was the first coinage struck under George VI following his accession after Edward VIII's abdication — a transition so abrupt that Southern Rhodesia, like most Commonwealth territories, had no Edward VIII coinage at all. The entire series skipped a reign.
