The shield is flanked by two scrolled supporters and surmounted by St. Edward's Crown. Royal cypher 'G VI' appears to the left of the shield and 'R I' to the right. Southern Rhodesia gained the right to issue its own coinage in 1932, when the British government granted the self-governing colony full monetary independence from South Africa. The 1937 issue was the first coinage struck under George VI following his accession after Edward VIII's abdication — a transition so abrupt that Southern Rhodesia, like most Commonwealth territories, had no Edward VIII coinage at all. The entire series skipped a reign.
