| Obverse description | The Gibraltar coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a three-towered castle above a base charged with a golden key, all rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished background. The legend GIBRALTAR arcs along the upper periphery, while the motto MONTIS INSIGNIA CALPE appears on a scroll beneath the shield. The denomination HALF CROWN and the date 2023 are inscribed in bold relief along the lower margin. |

| Reverse description | A prominent Celtic high cross fills the central field, its arms and ring richly decorated with interlaced knotwork in the traditional Insular style, set against a mirror-polished background. A circular boss marks the centre of the ring, with four smaller perforations at the junctions of the arms. Flanking the cross on either side are naturalistic sprays of Easter lily blooms and foliage in low relief, evoking the Easter Rising commemorative tradition. The two-line legend REMEMBER THEIR SACRIFICE is inscribed in bold relief along the lower exergue. A small triquetra or shamrock motif appears at the very base of the design. |

Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns marking Irish historical events before, an arrangement that puzzles many collectors but reflects the territory's long practice of licensing topical subjects through Pobjoy Mint and similar contractors. Irish independence — declared in 1919 by the First Dáil and consolidated through the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 — reaches its centenary only in an approximate sense by 2023, a date seemingly chosen for commercial rather than strict historical reasons.
