Opmerkingen

United Cigar Stores was one of the first true retail chains in American consumer history, operating over 1,600 outlets by the early 1920s under the American Tobacco trust's umbrella. These fractional certificates — denominated at half a unit — were issued as a loyalty or trade currency redeemable against purchases, part of a broader scrip ecosystem that major retail chains used to lock in repeat customers before federal regulators took a harder look at such schemes.

Eureka Specialty Printing of Scranton handled enormous volumes of trade tokens, scrip, and promotional currency for American businesses during this period. Their output was functional rather than fine — competent small-format printing work with no ambitions beyond legibility and fraud resistance.
