Obverse description A triple-towered Gothic castle with arched doorways and crenellated battlements occupies the central field, enclosed within a raised quinquefoil (five-lobe) inner border. The castle, emblematic of the Kingdom of Castile, is rendered in the characteristic medieval style of hammered billon coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design between the inner and outer beaded borders, reading ENRICVS DEI GRACIA, attributing the issue to Henry III by divine grace. The overall field shows typical irregularities consistent with hand-hammered production.
