| Reverse description | A long cross pattée divides the reverse into four quadrants, each containing a stylized castle tower, evoking the arms of Castile in allusion to Fernando I's dynastic claims. At the centre of the cross is superimposed the Portuguese royal shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx. The composition is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin royal legend FERNANDVS : REX : PORTVG running in the outer field. The entire design is struck on an irregular flan with characteristic hammered surface texture. |
