Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal shield of arms surmounted by a crown, flanked on either side by a letter or charge, all set within a Gothic cusped inner circle. The shield bears the quintas arrangement characteristic of the House of Burgundy. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer border, separated from the inner design by a beaded ring. The overall style is consistent with late 14th-century Iberian hammered coinage, with bold, slightly irregular die-struck relief.
