Reverse description A long cross pattee divides the reverse field into four quarters, each containing a crowned castle, representing the arms of Castile as an heraldic reference. At the center of the cross is a small escutcheon bearing the Portuguese quinas. A circular Latin legend encircles the entire design within a beaded border, the lettering displaying the characteristic Gothic majuscules of late medieval Portuguese coinage.
