| Obverse description | Central design features the national coat of arms of Panama in high relief, depicting a quartered shield with crossed swords and rifle in the upper quarters, a cornucopia and a shovel over the Isthmus in the lower quarters, flanked by two sailing ships, with a harpy eagle displayed with wings spread atop the shield. A scroll bearing the motto PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO divides the upper and lower portions of the shield. Two five-pointed stars appear at either side of the shield in the field. The legend REPUBLICA DE PANAMA arcs along the upper periphery, accompanied by a row of nine five-pointed stars, while MEDIO BALBOA appears along the lower periphery. |

| Reverse description | Central design depicts a reproduction of the coat of arms of the city of Panama as it appeared on colonial coinage of 1580, consisting of a multi-quartered heraldic shield featuring castles, lions, diagonal bars, and fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by a royal crown. The mintmark monogram 'A' over 'P' (for Panama) appears to the left of the shield, and the assayer mark 'ii' to the right, faithfully reproducing the markings of the original 16th-century colonial coinage. The legend MONEDA DE 1580 PANAMA VIEJO arcs along the upper periphery, and the date 2011 is inscribed along the lower periphery. |
