Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pius VII — a quartered shield bearing the cross and heraldic devices of the Chiaramonti family — surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, the traditional symbols of the Papacy. Two ornate tasseled cords flank the shield at left and right. The legend PONTIFICAT· ANNO XVI is arranged around the upper periphery, while M.BAI. appears in the lower field below the shield, denoting the denomination of mezzo baiocco.

Reverse description The reverse bears a bold inscription in six lines across the field, reading * PIVS * SEPTIMVS / PONTIFEX / MAXIMVS / MDCCCXVI / B, identifying the issuer as Pope Pius VII, Pontifex Maximus, with the Roman numeral date divided from the mint letter B by a solid horizontal line bisecting the lower portion of the field. A small six-pointed star appears above the legend at the top. The austere, purely epigraphic design is characteristic of Papal States copper coinage of the early nineteenth century.
