| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central device comprising the ornate papal coat of arms of Pope Pius IX, featuring a heraldic shield divided into diagonal bands bearing rampant lions, surmounted by the papal tiara (triregnum) and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter, with tasselled cords pendant on either side. The shield is framed by elaborate scrollwork mantling. The circular legend reads PIVS IX PONT MAX ANN V, separated by raised dots, running from lower left to lower right along the coin's milled border. |
