Obverse description Central device comprising the ornate papal coat of arms of Pope Pius IX, featuring a heraldic shield divided into diagonal bands bearing rampant lions, surmounted by the papal tiara (triregnum) and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter, with tasselled cords pendant on either side. The shield is framed by elaborate scrollwork mantling. The circular legend reads PIVS IX PONT MAX ANN V, separated by raised dots, running from lower left to lower right along the coin's milled border.

Reverse description The denomination 1/2 BAIOCCO is displayed in three lines at the centre of the field, with the date (year) below and the mint mark letter beneath the date. The entire central inscription is encircled by a laurel wreath tied at the base, with the sprays meeting at the top of the coin. A fine milled border runs around the outer edge of the reverse.
