Obverse description Central field bears a multi-line Persian legend in Nasta'liq script, partially off flan due to the small planchet size relative to the die. The inscription reads the imperial titles of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II: 'Sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya fazl Ilah Hami ud-din Muhammad Shah Alam Badshah,' affirming his sovereignty over the seven climes as shadow of divine favour and defender of the faith. The regnal year in AH dating appears within or adjacent to the legend. Execution is characteristic of late Mughal hammered coinage, with script density rendering full legibility difficult on this fractional denomination.
