Brandenburg-Ansbach entered 1757 in a precarious position: the margraviate sat directly in the path of competing Austrian, Prussian, and French interests as the Seven Years' War engulfed central Europe. Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, the last ruling Margrave before the territory passed to Prussia in 1791, maintained a mint at Schwabach that continued striking subsidiary silver throughout the conflict. The 1/12 Thaler denomination served day-to-day fiscal needs when larger silver was being hoarded or requisitioned.
