Dhar was a small Maratha-ruled state in the Malwa region, and by 1887 its coinage was already an anachronism. The British had been pressing princely states to abandon independent currency issues for decades, and most had complied. Anand Rao Pawar III issued under a courtesy arrangement that persisted largely because Dhar's coins circulated only locally and posed no threat to imperial monetary administration.
KM#11 is one of the final copper issues before the state's minting effectively ceased.
