Ollioules issued this piece as a local emergency currency (monnaie de nécessité) during the late 1990s wave of French municipal token schemes, most of which were tied to specific commercial circuits or town festivals rather than genuine monetary need. By 1997 these issues had become largely ceremonial — collectors were the intended audience as much as any local shopkeeper.
