Landau in der Pfalz was one of dozens of German municipalities that issued Goldmark-denominated Notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark had become functionally worthless. The odd denomination — 1,05 Mark Gold rather than a round figure — was deliberate: it reflected the exact equivalent value being guaranteed, often tied to a specific commodity or postal rate calculation, a common device used to give the notes a credibility that round numbers lacked.
The watermarked paper distinguishes this from the cheaper emergency issues of the same period. Municipal gold-denominated Notgeld was formally invalidated after the Rentenmark stabilization in November 1923.
