Two paragraphs of redemption and validity conditions are printed in smaller letterpress text, specifying encashment at the Stadtkasse and the städtische Sparkasse Landau in Mark Reichswährung at the official Berlin dollar exchange rate, and the condition of invalidity if not presented within one month of public notice prior to 1 April 1924. Landau in der Pfalz was one of dozens of German municipalities that issued Goldmark-denominated Notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark had become functionally worthless. The odd denomination — 1,05 Mark Gold rather than a round figure — was deliberate: it reflected the exact equivalent value being guaranteed, often tied to a specific commodity or postal rate calculation, a common device used to give the notes a credibility that round numbers lacked.
The watermarked paper distinguishes this from the cheaper emergency issues of the same period. Municipal gold-denominated Notgeld was formally invalidated after the Rentenmark stabilization in November 1923.
