Bielefeld's textile industry made it one of the few German cities with ready access to linen stock during the hyperinflation of 1923, when paper supplies were themselves becoming unreliable. The Stadtsparkasse exploited this directly, issuing emergency currency — Notgeld — printed on woven canvas rather than paper. The dual denomination, anchored to both the Goldmark and the US Dollar, was a deliberate hedge against the daily collapse of the Papiermark's purchasing power.

E. Gundlach A.G. was a local printing house well-positioned to handle the unusual substrate. Bielefeld's fabric-based Notgeld became internationally collected almost immediately upon issue.
