1000 Kronen

By 1921, the Oesterreichisch-ungarische Bank was issuing notes for a state that no longer existed. The Austro-Hungarian Empire had dissolved in 1918, yet the joint bank continued operating as a rump institution, printing currency used across the successor states — Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and others — until each government could establish its own monetary apparatus. Notes of this series were routinely overstamped by the new national authorities to claim them for local circulation and prevent cross-border arbitrage.

Austria's hyperinflationary spiral rendered the 1000 Kronen nearly worthless within two years of issue. The Austrian National Bank replaced the currency in 1925 at 10,000 Kronen to 1 Schilling.
